Estriol Cream Update

The NHS regularly reviews prescribed medicines to ensure that patients continue to receive safe, effective, and good-value treatments. Following the most recent review, there will be a change to one of the items on your prescription.

A key advantage of the new product is that it comes in a smaller tube but lasts roughly twice as long as your previous cream. This means fewer prescription requests, reduced packaging waste, and a more environmentally friendly option overall.

You will receive this updated medication automatically when you next collect your repeat prescription. Full details are shown below:

What you use now

  • Estriol 0.01% vaginal cream 80g

What it will change to

  • Estriol 1mg/g vaginal cream (0.1% cream) 15g

Both creams contain the same active ingredient, estriol, so the treatment effect remains the same.

  • Please continue using any remaining supply of your current cream before starting the new one
  • Any unused applicators should be discarded, as they are not compatible with the new product.

Before using the new cream, please read the accompanying patient information leaflet carefully. There are some small differences in how it is used:

  1. One applicator dose (filled to the red line) provides 0.5 mg of estriol.
  2. The amount of cream per application is smaller than before, but the dose of estriol (0.5 mg) remains identical.

This switch is expected to save the NHS around £280 per patient per year.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this change, please contact your GP practice or pharmacy.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
